A Tale of Two Mauls

Over the last few years, Sam Witwer has left quite an impression in the Star Wars universe, from his debut as Starkiller in The Force Unleashed to playing the wicked Son in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. However, the actor is probably better known these days for his Clone Wars role as Darth Maul. And now, in his latest project LEGO Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out, Witwer has once again taken up the reins as the villainous Maul -- except this time, it's totally hilarious.

IGN recently got to speak with Witwer about his comedic take on the LEGO Sith Lord, as well as Maul's Clone Wars counterpart, who recently got schooled by Darth Sidious in the episode "The Lawless." We also had a few minutes to talk about Star Wars: Episode VII and the ever illusive third installment of The Force Unleashed...

IGN: I first want to talk to you about The Empire Strikes Out. Obviously, you've had some experience voicing Darth Maul already, but this was "slightly" different from the Maul we know from The Clone Wars. How did you end up voicing this part?

Sam Witwer: Lucasfilm has been extraordinarily good to me. Once they hired me for Darth Maul, that was it. I'm Darth Maul. So if you want Darth Maul and you're getting it approved, I guess I sort of have first rights to refusal or approval. This happened with the Brisk Iced Tea spot, and it happened with this -- both of which I was more than happy to do because aside from Being Human, flexing my comedic muscles was a little bit new. Until I got the Being Human role three years ago, no one had ever let me be funny. So someone said to me, "Hey, do you want to play Darth Maul in this LEGO Star Wars movie? It's a comedic take on the character." Of course I do. I'd seen The Padawan Menace... so I was aware of what they were doing, and I was more than happy to jump in there.

IGN: At this point in your career, it's safe to say that you're pretty heavily ingrained in the Star Wars universe -- as multiple characters. But, like you said, this LEGO special was pretty different from what you've done in the past. What would you say is your favorite part of voicing more humorous roles like this as opposed to the serious stuff?

Witwer: My favorite part of this had to be that "I'm So Awesome" song, of course. But I've done these Star Wars jobs for awhile now, and I'm a Star Wars fan, so I daresay I know Star Wars pretty well. So to be able to kind of poke fun at it is a good time, especially when you don't really go too far with it. I have tremendous respect for George Lucas and Star Wars, but yeah, to take a not so serious approach to it is definitely a rare opportunity, so I was looking forward to it.

IGN: Speaking of the "I'm So Awesome" song, I also heard that you totally improvised that scene, which is pretty hysterical. Was there a lot of improv in the recording room, or was that just one of those spur-of-the-moment-type things?

Witwer: First, I want to give credit to our director Guy Vasilovich -- great guy. He was like, "Listen, when he comes in, can he be singing something?" So I started singing Star Wars tunes, and then he said, "Wait, do you know 'Duel of the Fates?'" I was like, "Of course!" So we were both in it together. Once one of us came up with one idea, the other one was like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah!" I just remember we were laughing our asses off. We were really enjoying it. The cool thing is, Star Wars is such a kid-friendly franchise, and this is another fun way to bring fans to the series. The LEGO franchise has been so ridiculously successful with all of the video games that they've been doing. The fact that those games are just as much fun for adults as they are for kids is really a testament to their design work, but also to the weird, bizarre, chocolate-and-peanut-butter marriage between LEGO and Star Wars. I do not claim to understand that. All I know is that it works, and it's always worked for me -- but I don't know why. I don't know what the hell it is about LEGO that seems to lend itself to Star Wars and vice versa.

IGN: Of course you're known for your immense Star Wars fandom, but what is your relationship like with LEGO Star Wars in particular? Were you a fan of the video games?

Witwer: Obviously, I played with LEGOs when I was a kid, but the Star Wars connection for me is the video games, yes. Someone said, "Listen, pick up LEGO Star Wars." Weirdly enough, I'd love to say, like, "Oh, that's a kids game," but that wasn't my reaction. I somehow got it. I was like, "Oh, it's going to be a comedic Star Wars game. Yeah, okay, I'll check that out." So I picked it up and just laughed the entire time I played it. They're really, really fun games. I think I have all of them.

IGN: What was it like for you in the recording room going from this darker, scarier Darth Maul that we've seen in The Clone Wars to this lighthearted LEGO version? Was it strange for you tapping into this comedic side of the character?

Witwer: It's funny, because I've actually done three different versions of Darth Maul. The Brisk Iced Tea spot -- which is on YouTube -- they said they wanted Darth Maul to be a tiny bit of Ron Burgundy, so I kind of put that in there. The LEGO Darth Maul, they didn't really have a character description, they just had a situation and gave me the script. The Emperor is kind of the father figure, and Darth Vader and Darth Maul are sort of like brothers. So I decided, you know, Darth Maul sounds like this, but if you pitch it like a teenager, he starts sounding a bit like Keanu Reeves. [Laughs] So Darth Maul is kind of like Ted from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. That's sort of where I was going with it.

IGN: Switching gears a little bit, I do want to ask you about The Clone Wars, because Darth Maul had a pretty freaking huge episode a couple weeks ago in "The Lawless." Following his standoff with Darth Sidious, what do you think is going through Maul's head now that he's lost Savage, who's not only his apprentice, but his brother as well?

Witwer: Now that the death has happened, I think the guy is devastated. The irony is that he had just put Obi-Wan Kenobi through exactly the same horror. In fact, he'd done it before. One of the things that I loved about the death of Savage is, if you watch that, it's a mirror image of the death of Qui-Gon Jinn, when Obi-Wan watched helplessly as Darth Maul killed his master. Darth Maul watches helplessly as his brother is murdered by Darth Sidious. I thought it was wonderful. It was such a twisted, awful take. We tell these stories from the point of view of the bad guys, and I think it's a very interesting thing. We see some of that in the Star Wars movies, and we see a lot of that in The Clone Wars. As far as where we're heading right now, yeah, he's in despair, and he's under Darth Sidious' boot heel once again.

IGN: And like you said, it sounds like Sidious has other plans for Maul. Of course, you probably know some of those plans already -- and I know you have to keep your secrets -- but suffice to say this isn't necessarily the end of the road for Darth Maul?

Witwer: No, no it isn't. First of all, Dave Filoni has told me some of the wonderful things that are coming, so I'm very excited. But he said to me, "So we're probably going to kill this guy after a few more episodes, yeah?" And George Lucas was like, "No. No, we're not. We made that mistake once before. We're not doing that again." So Darth Maul is going to figure prominently into the series. I don't know that you're going to see him a lot. It's more of a thing like, "Okay, we know he's out there, we don't know what he's up to, and that's scary." It's something you talk about, something you wish about, but something that when you see, big things happen. You can't bring him back all the time, because then you'd start to overuse him. In terms of what he will be used for in the future, Dave Filoni's told me a piece of that, and yes, it's extraordinarily dramatic and impactful.

Continued on Page 2, as Witwer discusses the future of The Clone Wars' Darth Maul, The Force Unleashed III and Star Wars: Episode VII.

Wrestling Wrap Up: New WWE Title Belt!

Listen, be honest.

Would the ladies love me more if I did this?

Probably, right?

Ambrose, and his meticulous facial ticks have touched a nerve. Down in the girl parts region. The guy's tongue is on a rampage. He licks his lips more than LL Cool J in a Fun Dip factory. He sticks his tongue out more than Bill the Cat in an Ack Factory.

So, for those of you who hadn't seen The Shield's two PPV matches, what did you think of them on their first RAW match last night? That match they had against Sheamus, Ryback and Jericho was sort of a reworking of their PPV match, since most matches seen by fewer people than who watch RAW get reworked for RAW (the excellent Del Rio vs. Ziggler match was a re-do of their Main Event match). The Shield really impressed me at TLC, but their matches at Elimination Chamber and RAW were just okay. A decent showing with the most important part being that, for f***'s sake, they won. Not only did they win against the seemingly unbeatable team of Cena, Ryback and Sheamus, but they won the next night too - defying my hot shot theory that Jericho, who'd awkwardly inserted himself into Cena's place, was going to reveal himself as the leader of The Shield and turn on Ryback.  Turns out, the awkwardness was just awkward.

All that and they got to have JBL put them over both the Freedbirds and the Horsemen. Dayyum.

Ack!

But the Jericho swerve never happened and The Shield won again. Jericho being behind the Shield would have served a pretty nifty purpose, and given some real weight to his return. Without that reveal, that I freely admit, like a nutbag, I wished really hard would happen within the timespan of about twenty minutes, it just seems even more like Jericho's been all over the map since he's been back.

In a month's time he's been in the Rumble, feuded with Ziggler, had a match with Punk, Big Show, an Elimination Chamber match and now a war with The Shield. A few weeks ago the rumored plan was to have him face Ryback at 'Mania, so a Shield swerve would have made sense. Keep in mind that if Jericho's short-term contract is also up at 'Mania, then he'll have to lose at 'Mania. Another loss. I mean, look, Jericho's looked amazing since his return and the bouts have been stellar, but he doesn't seem to be serving a purpose other than outshining 90% of the roster. And winning polls that were supposed to be won by Orton. And getting bigger pops than Orton, Cena, Sheamus and Ryback.

Okay, I get it! Thank you, AJ. Enough now.

I really do like the Shield, and I'm even more happy that they're beating big guys clean. It means they'll stick around a bit longer. Some of you out there wonder why so many of us are looking for a "secret leader," and to be honest there doesn't have to be one. I think when they started attacking so many different people and their "injustice" explanations started to get more murky, it seemed like they might have had a different agenda than the one they originally stated. But they could just be themselves. Still, if done right, a big star revealing themselves as the true leader, in a heel turn move even, could be awesome. Plus, The Shield could always turn on that leader and Nation of Domination him. Which is now a verb because JOURNALISM!

Anyhow, I think that some of us douchebag dreamers are also juat looking for that extra big story/swerve to get us into the 'Mania mood. Things seem a little grim right now. We're still over a month out, but Cena, who's now apparently done giving a s*** about The Shield after losing that one mid-card match to them, seems so irrelevant now. I don't know. Last year Rock vs. Cena was huge. And I thought they actually had a freakin' great match. With an ending that was a welcome surprise. This year, with the ending pretty much cinched up, things aren't buzzing like they were before. Not that I don't think they could have another excellent match, but it's Cena's stock that's fallen over the past year. Ever since that dumb, jokey pre-Rumble promo, Cena seems diminished. Not that most of us have a deep love for the man anyhow, but last year it really felt like Titan vs. Titan. There's a part of me that kind of just wants him to keep feuding with The Shield. He fits in that scenario better. Especially after Ambrose went off on Cena. Cena, basically, had no comeback for that. And then he lost.

Plus, there's the Punk factor. Man, there's nothing like teasing us with a big match and then telling us it's next week. Apparently, friggin' Undertaker is still wishy-washy about this year's 'Mania and so the WWE is giving him one more week to think it over and then they have to decide the finish to Punk vs. Cena. If Taker's back, Punk will lose. If Taker's out, then it'll end controversially or in a draw so that the 'Mania title match can become a Triple Threat. Which, in the end, might be for the best. I really wanted Punk vs. Undertaker. But if it means Punk has to lose to Cena and then enter into a rushed program then maybe it's better to let last year's "End of an Era" match be the end of an era.  Then we can move on to the next era...

Rock vs. Punk at Elimination Chamber, plus the new WWE Championship Belt, on page 2...

Layoffs Hit Activision, Treyarch

Activision has laid off 30 employees in an effort to move out of the licensed games business. Activision confirmed the news this afternoon, and a representative provided IGN with the following statement:

"Like any successful business, Activision Publishing consistently works to align its costs with its revenues – this is an ongoing process. In 2013, we expect to release fewer games based on license properties and as a result are realigning our structure to better reflect the market opportunities and our slate. Approximately, 30 full-time employees have been impacted globally, which represents approximately one half of one percent of Activision Blizzard’s employee population. We are offering those employees who are impacted outplacement counseling services."

While no specific titles are mentioned, Activision’s licensed games business includes Transformers, James Bond, Spider-Man, Family Guy and many more.

Activision also confirmed layoffs at Call of Duty: Black Ops II studio Treyarch, providing the following additional statement:

“Now that we have launched Black Ops II, we are taking a minimal reduction in staff to better align our development talent against the needs of DLC development. The release of the DLC will not be impacted by this move.”

We’ve reached out for clarification on exactly what franchises might be affected by the shift away from licensed games and will update this story with any additional information we receive.

IGN wishes the best of luck to anyone affected by today’s news.

Christian Bale to Ascend Mount Everest?

Oscar winner Christian Bale is reportedly in talks to star in Everest, a true-life feature from Working Title and Universal.

Although several projects are looking to tackle the famed mountain, Baltasar Kormakur's film tells the 1996 story of two groups that attempted to reach Everest's summit and the disastrous events that followed. Kormakur directed last year's Contraband and the upcoming 2 Guns, based on the graphic novel.

THR reports that Bale will play Rob Hall, "the leader of a New Zealander group who ran Adventure Consultants."

Principle photography is currently set for this summer in Iceland.

Abrams Talks Klingons, Carol Marcus

J.J. Abrams may have Star Wars: Episode VII in the pipeline, but let's not forget that he's still also at the helm of the Star Trek franchise. The long-awaited sequel Star Trek Into Darkness hits in May, which means more and more details about the top-secret storyline will begin to be revealed in the coming months.

In a new interview with MTV, Abrams addresses two new additions to the rebooted series: the nasty Klingons and the lovely Doctor Carol Marcus. Regarding the former, he confirms that the ridge-headed aliens will in fact be bad guys in the new film: "Their role in this is definitely that of adversary," says Abrams, "and you'll see how they play out."

As far as Carol Marcus goes, the character who will be played by Alice Eve is traditionally thought of as a love interest for Captain Kirk. But Abrams says the film won't necessarily focus on that aspect of their relationship.

"[He] meets her fairly early on and again she plays a science officer, someone who is part of the adventure," says the director. "It's very much an action-adventure movie and once that gets going it's a very difficult thing to park the story. So it's very difficult to do a romantic interlude. Her role is important -- she wouldn't be in the movie otherwise."

But has she started working on the Genesis program yet?

Talk to Senior Editor Scott Collura on Twitter at @ScottIGN, on IGN at scottcollura and on Facebook.
